Grace Guestroom

A Journey of Faith and Service

In the Fall of 2022, Pastor Eric Utto-Galarneau reached out to Gail Frare, the chairperson of St. Mark’s Social Justice Team, with a vision to create transitional housing in the Education building. Together, they felt the Holy Spirit guiding them to transform the largest room in the building into a studio apartment for families in need. The High School Youth room was an ideal space—it already had a mini-kitchen, a thoughtful architectural plan was in place, and the City of Lacey had approved the project. It was clear that the time was right for this mission.

An email sent to the Social Justice Team and others on November 3, 2022, sparked immediate interest, with nearly 20 people volunteering to support the project. Julie Thumser-Kerlee, who facilitates groups for the State of Washington, graciously agreed to guide the group and ensure everything stayed on track while keeping the congregation fully informed.

The Grace Guestroom (GG) task force began its work on January 8, 2023. By mid-March, the team had developed a proposal, which was presented to the Church Council. The Council approved a pledge drive and a congregational vote. Through generous donations from the St. Mark community, $18,000 was raised in just a few weeks, proving that the funds were there to proceed with the project. On April 30, 2023, the congregation voted unanimously in favor of moving forward, and the dream began to take shape.

The Construction Process

Long-time St. Mark member and retired architect, John Martin, led the remodeling of the room, working closely with Darren Ahlf, a general contractor and son of longtime St. Mark members Ken and Marilyn Ahlf. Darren had previously worked on the church’s shower and bathroom remodels. Together, John and Darren spent the summer upgrading the room’s electrical system, heating, flooring, and painting. A new exterior door and window were added to meet city code. Several local businesses generously supported the project: Granite Gallery, Energy Star Systems & Stoves, Advantage Lock and Key, and Lowe’s all donated or provided discounts on essential materials and services.

Design and Furnishing the Room

The room was quickly furnished thanks to the generosity of the St. Mark congregation. Marilyn Ahlf and Bethesda Eilers spearheaded the pledge drive, gathering both new and gently used furniture and kitchen items. Special donations included a bunk bed from Tyler Panco (grandson of Marilyn), a dresser from Brent Chapman, and a complete bedroom set from Darren Ahlf’s mother-in-law. Many others contributed essential items, such as a microwave from Kristina Tamm-Finnerud and a computer from David Eilers and Hannah Moats. The outpouring of support was overwhelming, and the room began to feel like a true home.

Dedication Day: August 27, 2023

The dedication of the Grace Guestroom was a moment of joy and gratitude. Our first transitional family—mom and three children—were there to see the completed space for the first time. The smiles on their faces, especially when they saw the bunk beds, were priceless. The congregation gathered to celebrate God’s work in making this dream a reality. We were reminded of the incredible generosity that flowed through the St. Mark family and the lasting impact it would have on the lives of those in need.

Welcoming the Family

Carol Porter, a member of St. Mark, was chosen as the first Grace Guestroom Liaison. She served as the point of contact for the family, ensuring they had the support they need while respecting their privacy. Church members were encouraged to contact Carol with any offers of assistance, allowing her to communicate additional needs to the congregation as they arose.
