St. Mark Community Garden Happenings
The pictures accompanying this article are of last summer during harvest time. As you can see, many volunteers work in the garden to make it a success! Potatoes, carrots, and tomatoes are our largest crops but cabbage, squash, celery, broccoli, corn, and cucumbers are also grown and provide a wide variety of fresh produce for the Thurston County Food Bank.
Spring Field Trips
This spring we again hosted field trips for ALL the classes (28!!) at Mountain View Elementary School. We have no pictures of that activity due to photo rules of the North Thurston Public Schools but rest assured, all classes
- planted a crop,
- got a garden tour,
- had a healthy snack
- and were in a class picture
The field trips cost the school nothing and the kids have great fun learning how rewarding gardening can be.
Volunteering in the Garden
Church volunteers like Brent, Earla, Gary, Gail, Kristina, Barbara, Gary, Jenny, and Inge along with community volunteers like Mack, Ryan, Joseph, Liana, and Ion all have a wonderful time planting and harvesting God’s bounty.
Recently a man and his wife who recently moved from Romania arrived at the garden (they found it from the website) and asked if they could help. In Romania they had a large garden and missed it very much. They started volunteering and have already been a HUGE help – a WIN-WIN for all.
If you are interested in volunteering, please email Gail Frare at gatofrare@comcast.net, or show up any morning Monday – Saturday and Gary Delozier, our head gardener will put you to work. Our June work parties will be the 8th and the 22nd from 8-10am – join us!!
