In today’s sermon, we are reminded that there is true freedom in valuing those around us more than our possessions or wealth.
Jesus said to Saint Francis, “Repair my church”. After some thought, it occurred to him that Jesus was speaking of rebuilding the people rather than the actual church structure. He stripped himself of all possessions and went out to share his belief that there is unity in living and loving together in community.
Pastor Beth reminded us that, like Saint Francis, we too can find true freedom when we don’t allow our possessions to “influence and insulate us”. Jesus says, “Sell what you own and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.” (Mark 10:21) It can be a challenge, but we need to remember what we have and all of creation belongs to God. We are called to care for it, use it, and share it; remembering always that it is in giving that we receive.
