The theme for the Lessons & Carols and sermon today, the second Sunday of Christmas, was light. “God saw that the light was good and separated the light from darkness…” (Genesis 1); “What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not overcome it.” (John 1); “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of your LORD has risen upon you.” (Isaiah 60); “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5)
Pastor Eric posed questions to each of us related to light: The light of God is with us…how might that look for you? Where have you gone to seek Jesus and have found the overwhelming joy of the light? What is the light in the darkness for you?
In theory, the source for light emits the light, and it is absorbed. It then bounces back out and is seen and realized. In practice, we absorb the warmth of the light from God and reflect it back out. Pastor Eric invites us to think about what that looks like for us as we step out into the new year. You just never know where we will be the light of the world, where we will reflect the warmth of God’s light out so others may be nurtured and healed. So go ahead, boldly throw it out there…and just see what happens!
