This Sunday not only Pastor Beth shared a message, but so did Lisha M. age 12. While Pastor Beth shared the sermon, artist Lisha created her sermon on a canvas. The theme for worship this morning was “God’s work. Our hands.” In other words, what does it mean to take up your cross and follow Jesus?
Pastor Beth shared several quotes to illustrate what being a follower of Jesus means. “God does not need your good works…but your neighbor does” – Martin Luther. “We are a little pencil in the hand of a writing God who is sending a love letter to the world” – Mother Teresa. Beth says that we must leave our comfortable existence and deal, as Christ did. with the suffering and injustice of the world.
Lisha began her work of art by taping the outline of a cross on a blank, black canvas. Lisha added smaller strips of tape to create many different shapes that fit together to form the cross. This “mosaic” of pieces represents us and our different lives coming together under the cross of Christ to be the body of Christ in our world. Lisha used sponges to add a rainbow of vibrant colors onto the cross. The variety of colors are symbolic of our many different gifts and life experiences. After this, Lisha removed the tape to reveal the cross underneath. For a finishing touch, Lisha took a tooth brush dabbed in white paint and splattered the paint around the cross, creating the image of light shining from the cross. When Lisha completed her artwork, the colorful paint on her hands revealed the truth about “God’s work. Our hands.” Sometimes it is a bit messy, but God’s work is creative, colorful, beautiful and amazing!
Thank you, Pastor Beth and Lisha, for sharing your creative and artistic gifts with us!
