The Gospel this week was an allegory about a King (God) hosting a wedding celebration for his son (Jesus) and his bride (his church) where none of the specially invited guests (religious authorities) attend. When he sends his servants out to gather people, they are killed. The King is upset but continues to invite a broader group of people to the wedding. Many then come but one person who was not dressed in a wedding garment (not in the right “heart” to accept Jesus), was bound hand and foot and thrown into the outer darkness.
Jesus initially tried to engage the religious leaders of the day in learning and dialogue but was repeatedly rejected. They were not looking for deeper understanding. Near the end of his ministry his parables, like this one, got more strident and the religious leaders were exposed for their hypocrisy. They were incensed and he was ultimately crucified for it.
The Kingdom of God is a celebration like a wedding where all are welcome and no one is excluded. If we are just open and listen to God we will see with new eyes how joyful life can be with God. If we are not open and listening, if there is resentment, anger, or doubt, these will keep us from fully receiving Jesus and the joy of his kingdom. Jesus invites us into the celebration of God’s grace, and generosity, and we give thanks for God’s love and mercy.
Receive the invitation to the feast of love – All are welcome!
