MY, OH MY! The St. Mark Softballer’s season has made the turn around third base and is heading in a big hurry for home! And what a fine run of fun and fellowship on the field it’s been!
Even though our somewhat-less-than-stellar season record of 2 wins, 5 losses and 1 tie sounds like the mark of a floundering third-rate team, no matter what the eventual scoring outcome there has been an electricity of enthusiasm and sporting gusto at every one of our games! We’ve had moments of brilliance as we’ve caught soaring fly balls, fielded screaming ground hits, and turned double plays to excitedly end innings on defense! And we’ve experienced a multitude of offensive hits, most of them singles, but also a deluge of doubles, a handful of triples, and even a few glory-filled home runs!
And in the palm of the other mitt, we’ve been led by a rookie coach who’s still learning the ropes. We had several “hmmmmmm-what-just-happened” moments in the course of a couple of games, which gave pause for some serious head-scratching. But in hindsight this gave us the opportunity to (just like in real life) grow and learn, and in the context of softball decipher some of those somewhat questionable rules of the game and understand the purpose and the limits of some surprising “allowable” strategies. But all in all, embracing the primary virtue of just having fun and fellowship remains our team’s anthem!
So, needless to say, there’s fun and excitement at every Griffins game! And there’s plenty of room on the bleachers for as many St. Mark Screachers (our beloved “cheerleading” crowd) as we can muster up! This Thursday, July 8, we will play a double-header, starting at 7:10 pm. Please join us for an evening of sporting spectacular and watch the St. Mark Softballers…………..PLAY BALL!! – Coach Martin
