Many of you know David as the “Prof” from PLU. Those that know them a little better say “Really”! David and Arvis met at Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn. where their young romance began in 1954 and has lasted 56 years – amazing! Dave received his B.A. there, continued at U of Minnesota for his Masters and then his PhD at the U of Iowa. He survived 38 years as professor, coach, and athletic and academic administrator, a first at Wartburg College, Waverly, IA; and lastly at PLU for 28 years. His students also “survived an unfavorite prof” who was known to wheel tests into the classroom on a dolly – intimidating them (were Pastors Eric & Beth among them?). One of the surprises in togetherness was each receiving Distinguished Alumni Awards – Dave from Concordia College and Arvis from the Swedish Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis.
Nursing opened many doors for Arvis. She taught sex education for teens, including disabled teens, which led to introducing sex ed in many churches and eventually authoring a book, Sex Education from a Biblical Perspective published by Baker Book House in 1981. Counseling for parents and teens became a great ministry for her. She was also involved in writing various health legislations for the State of WA. Retirement from nursing allowed her to pursue a favorite ministry – singing with children and with residents in nursing homes.
Dave and Arvis are both cancer survivors and active in Relay for Life – providing monies for cancer research. Dave has been an active Rotarian for 45 years – just ask Dave about Rotary. Hobbies for Dave include woodworking and sports (golf handicap – woods and irons!) After retirement, their ministries have continued at Lake Lawrence where a variety of groups gather yearly for fun and fellowship. A favorite event is a baptism (in the lake!) service for local Lutheran and Korean congregations. We love St. Mark and are slowly getting to know some very caring parishioners. Thank you for being who you are! Come visit us at “Time Out” – LakeLawrence!
