Pastor’s Ponderings on Pentecost – 2013

It has been said that “April showers bring May flowers.” If this is true, we should have a garden full of flowers this May!

I found a similar quote by William Ward that reflects upon the showers in life: “We should be thankful for our tears; they prepare us for a clearer vision of God.”

Although there is much truth in it, I confess that I am not sure if I like that quote or not! I am not always thankful for my tears, nor am I always thankful for the rain or the storms in life. These life events disrupt us and our plans. They can cause great pain, confusion, sorrow, and grief. Yet, it is very true that they also can turn us (force us?!) to seek the face of God.

Jesus tells us that he is sending us “The Comforter,” “The Advocate,” the gift of the Holy Spirit. In the Gospel of John, Jesus says, “The Father will give you an Advocate to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of Truth. The Holy Spirit will teach you everything and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace, I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. “

Jesus knows all about the troubling tears and scary storms of life. He knows that we need an Advocate, a Comforter. When our hearts are troubled from life’s nastiest storms, Jesus’ prayer for us is peace. He reminds us that God is with us forever — no matter what. The Holy Spirit breathes new life into us, gives us eyes to see God more clearly, and opens our hearts to God’s presence. This presence of God often has a human face, reflected in those who surround us with love, support, goodness, and grace.

We are the body of Christ on earth. As we endure the storms of life together, we have promise and hope. The Holy Spirit is with us, guiding us, comforting us, turning us to God, helping us see God more clearly, and reminding us who we are and how to live as the people of God.

As you live in the midst of storms and tears, may God bless you and keep you. May God’s face shine on you and be gracious to you. May God look upon you with love and give you peace. Amen!

Peace,
