Would you ever think 20 rows of potatoes could be planted in 33 minutes? Well, on Saturday, April 14, St Mark’s Potato Patch Planters set this record! Three major factors contributed to the success of the event – preparation, attendance and a wonderful breakfast spread!
Preparation included plowing the land; securing the planter potatoes from Kiwanis; laying them all out in the Parish Hall for cutting, drying, bagging; staking and stringing the rows; and digging the trenches.
Attendance included lots of St. Mark members, Thurston County Food Bank representatives, community members and three Girl Scout Troops from Olympia and Centralia.
The huge breakfast buffet of deviled eggs, fruits, cheeses, muffins, pastries, bagels, juice and coffee, was prepared by Chuck and Pam. The tasty treats were very much appreciated after all the hard work in the garden.
Success this year is a credit to the leadership of Brent and Gail. Also, Haldor’s sharing his “trenching expertise” provided for quick planting and will definitely be used in the future.
There are several rows yet to be adopted for weeding, nurturing and harvesting in the Fall. Contact Gail or Brent to get involved in this fun way to contribute to the Thurston County Food Bank. (Click on an image below to enlarge)
