What is the proper temperature to refrigerate fruits and vegetables? Should produce be stored in plastic bags? Do I wash fruits prior to storing them or just before serving? If you attended St. Mark’s Feed & Weed Potluck and Educational Class on July 27th, you know the answers! Our very own Karen B gave an informative presentation, “Food Safety In The Garden”, in which she warned that more food-borne illness outbreaks are linked to fresh produce than to meat or poultry. Her common sense guidelines for safe handling of foods produced in a garden included tips on composting, harvesting, storage, and personal hygiene. Karen’s handout containing these guidelines can be accessed to view or print .
Please mark your calendars for this Wednesday, August 17th, 6:00 pm when Karen will again present a class at the Feed and Weed Potluck. Her topic will be “Preserving Food From Your Garden”. Come and find out about methods to preserve fruits and vegetables, what’s safe and what’s not when canning, and resources that can help you. Don’t miss it!
