The Creation Story

Sanctuary Wall boasts Creation story

Retired Pastor David Nelson gave the sermon Sunday June 19th in which he explained his latest wall creation – the Creation story.  The first of the seven panels symbolized darkness and chaos and was done with silver and black.   The second panel depicts the creation of the sky and was inspired by David’s youth looking at the night sky at Rose Lake, in which he developed such a sense of wonder about the universe.  He believes that a sense of wonder is necessary for faith.

Day three, the making of Earth, Sea, and plantlife is depicted with Evergreen trees and Mountains like here in the Pacific Northwest.

The centerpiece, Day 4, is a rendition of a Hubbard telescope photo of the Rosetta Nebula – the place where ‘stars are born’ – symbolizing the origin of the universe.  Day 5 was the creation of living beings such as birds and salmon, and a dove symbolizing the spirit of God. Day (panel) 6 represents maleness and femaleness with an ancient cave-like  painting symbolizing a man and woman.  At the other end of the wall, the seventh panel symbolizes the Sabbath, in a mixture of gold and black.

Pastor Nelson stated that we were created to be continuing creators of God’s world.  We are artists of kitchen, sickroom, courtroom, garden,  people who know that the world is unfinished.  “Gods will be done” means for us all to join in God’s new work – to be weavers of wonder, poets of praise, gardeners of Grace.  The sermon ended as usual with “Grace and Peace, and all that good stuff”.

Thank you Pastor Nelson – it was wonderful to hear from you again.
