This month, Robin S shares her passion for working with animal rescue organization, Best Friends.
My volunteer opportunity began 15 years ago when I received a booklet from Best Friends Animal Society. I had been donating to various animal rescue organizations over the years and had somehow made it on to their solicitation list. That was the beginning of my relationship with Best Friends, the largest No-Kill animal rescue organization in North America.
Ten years later I made my first trip to Angel Canyon, five miles north of Kanab, Utah, to visit and volunteer. It was love at first sight. The surrounding beauty is second only to the beauty of the spirit of the animals and the employees that provide their care. Meeting and working with animals that have suffered by the hands of humans or by nature itself and witnessing their incredible spirit and drive to overcome their obstacles was a humbling experience. It made me reflect on how I handle what I consider issues and obstacles in my life.
I have continued my annual volunteer visits since that first time and call it my “Disneyland.” I go there to decompress, renew my spirit, and reflect on God‘s blessings in my life and what‘s really important; hoping to learn to look at life‘s challenges with the same grace, dignity, and compassion as those very special animals and the people who work with them.
Locally I volunteer with Concern for Animals. We are responsible with the care of the cats at Lacey Petsmart and hold dog adoption events there twice a month. We have several fund raising events. The largest being Toast for Tails, a wine tasting silent auction event which was just held in November where we raised over $20,000. Our funds go to provide assistance to our local community.
